My best friend has been in abusive relationship after abusive relationship. It ALWAYS starts as you described. Buy her nice things to make her feel guilty and like she owes him. Beg for what he wants, guilt trip her if begging doesn't work, and swing if the guilt trip doesn't work. incase that still doesn't work, pretend it's all cuz he was drunk and go on to do it again, and again. Get away from him while you can. Cuz it doesn't take long for him to convince you he does it all just out of love. (it sounds crazy, but somehow they do it to the strongest of women.) Let the police know just incase. If the breakup doesn't go well, they already have it on record. let as many of your closest friends and family know, and try to have somebody (preferably somebody that can hold their own) present when you end it.
