Gender Studies: Why are some university students?

People here who aren't in fraternities and sororities usually dislike them, because they're not fun, they have their own cookie cutter and they turn everyone into the same sort of obnoxious cookie, and the things they do for hazing often involve abuse and animal abuse, plus they're usually not too big on hygiene. The ones that don't mind them or like them are usually IN them. It's not jealousy - any fool can join them, if only they are masochistic enough to go through the stuff required to get in.
