Why are people so jealous of others who belong to fraternities and sororities?

Is it because they couldn't make it through the selection process and get a bid? I just read a response on here that was extremely derogatory towards fraternity members calling us hot shot rapists frat boys. This is most disrespectful thing I have ever heard in my life. Do people say these negative things out of jealousy or ignorance?
